Confessions of a "Bull Nuke's" Wife....

My husband came home with an article from the Undersea Warfare Fall 2011 publication titled "The Bull Nuke" written by Master Chief Petty Officer James Grant. He told me this is what he was going to be doing and it would explain his job. I have to confess, I didn't read it. Mostly because it's full of  things that make my brain go blah, blah, blah. I did however scan it.

This is what I got from it:
  • A "Bull Nuke" is an EDMC (Engineering Duty Master Chief)
  • He is not always a Master Chief (this I can vouch for because my husband is a Senior Chief)
  • In port his work hours can range from 50 to 80 hours a week and sometimes 100 hours (be still my beating heart, someday I will see my husband again, currently he is pushing the 80 mark in port)
  • There are currently 91 Bull Nuke positions in the entire Submarine Force (okay, impressed with his job a bit)
The unofficial things I have heard and learned are that the divorce rate is high (somewhere I read 80% but can't find the link to it), they age faster while in this job, they are stressed to their max and back again,  and they often fall asleep while talking to you. Of course the latter part might be because he's working over 60 hours a week but it could be that I may have bored him to sleep. I think I will err on the side of just plain tired.
